How Much of Your Income Goes to Government?
BleedRate exists because the real cost of government in South Africa is invisible by design. Most South Africans check their PAYE on their payslip, wince, and move on — unaware that income tax is only one piece of a much larger puzzle. When you add VAT on every purchase, fuel levies on every litre you burn, municipal rates and utility surcharges, vehicle licence fees, excise duties on alcohol and tobacco, import duties, airport taxes, and the corporate taxes embedded in every price tag, the picture changes dramatically.
Research consistently shows that most South African taxpayers in the middle-income bracket contribute between 30% and 50% of their gross income to various spheres of government when all taxes are counted. A household earning R600,000 per year might pay R130,000 in PAYE — but add R32,000 in VAT, R12,000 in fuel levies, R18,000 in municipal charges, and thousands more across dozens of other levies, and the true number exceeds R220,000. That's over 36% of gross income before the year is out.
What BleedRate calculates: PAYE across all seven income tax brackets, UIF contributions, VAT on your consumption spending, the General Fuel Levy and Road Accident Fund levy on petrol and diesel, electricity environmental levies, excise duties on beer, wine, spirits, cigarettes and cigars, the Health Promotion Levy on sugary beverages, municipal rates and utility charges, vehicle licence fees, toll fees, transfer duty, Capital Gains Tax, Dividends Tax, import duties on consumer goods and online purchases, airport taxes, accommodation levies, and an estimate of the corporate taxes embedded in the prices you pay at retail.
How to use this calculator: Enter your annual salary and bonus in the Income section. Then work through each category that applies to you — fuel consumption, alcohol and tobacco spending, municipal charges, property, investments, and travel. The more accurate your inputs, the more accurate your result. You don't need to fill in every field; leave anything that doesn't apply at zero. Click Calculate My Tax Burden and you'll get a full breakdown of every rand flowing from your pocket to government, ranked by size.
